Tithes & Offerings
These two words are often spoken in the same breath...but what's the difference between them? “Tithe” literally means "tenth" or 10 percent. A tithe is the first 10% of your income and everything that comes into your hands after that. The tithe is what we owe God. It is our act of obedience to His will. An offering is anything you give in addition to 10%. The offering is where the blessing is and how much to give is between you and God. The Bible says in Deuteronomy 14:23 "The purpose of tithing is to teach you always to put God first in your lives..."
Giving above your tithes and offerings as God has purposed in your heart is called seed sowing. After you have brought your tithes/offerings into your church, everything you give above that is called seed sowing, and we call this the overflow. The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 9:6, "He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.
